Why You Should Read Books

READING MAKES A FULL MAN!

"THE FAMILIES THAT READ ARE THE FAMILIES THAT RULE THE WORLD"

                                             Napoleon

" If you want to lead, read."

                                        Duyilemi A. Felix

If you want men to book for you, read books. I haven’t seen any truly successful man in any field of endeavors, who is not a reader. Books are the ladder to leadership. Until you become studious, you can’t stand out. The only distance between a man and a great future is right information hidden in books. When I see a man’s appetite for knowledge, I can predict his future.

My good wife Atolani Duyilemi once said, "If you are open to learning, you are open to blessings”

“Reading makes a full man.

It is a yardstick for comparison.

A leveler for understanding,

A square for sizing up,

A plumb rule for concentration.

It provokes thought,

Inspires meditation,”  Said  Prevette.

Reading engenders reflection, causes deliberation, and gives you greater power to concentrate on the job. Napoleon once said: "Show me a family of readers, and I will show you, a family that rules the world."

Reading increases your understanding, gives you an insight into the thinking of others.

It helps you to form a pattern of thought and will help you to influence and motivate others to think and act. It  opens up new vistas, ripens judgment, stabilizes thought, and teaches you to be tolerant and considerate of others. It helps you to grow and expand.

Through books You learn to compare with Shakespeare, reason with Plato, meditate with Emerson, visualize with Jefferson, observe with Burroughs, weigh with Bacon, think with Socrates, judge with Lincoln, dramatize with Churchill and love with Jesus.

Many simply know the importance of reading, but the problem is time! Recently, on a national Television, I was asked, “Dr. Duyilemi Felix, how do we find time to read in the face of the myriad responsibilities that choke our time daily?” My response was, “Do you eat? How do you find time to eat despite those responsibilities?” The truth is, we always find time to do those things we consider to be important to us. Don’t we?

However, I admit without strategies in place, we may go for years without reading a good book. In this article I will show you 5 strategies to enhance your reading culture.

1.Buy a New Book Every Month.

Not just to fill up your library, but to fill up your mind. I have personally realized that each time I am “slow” on reading; I know I need to buy something new. Sometimes we get used to old books we have that we lost excitement about reading them again. The culture of buying a new book will enable us to maintain our love for reading.

2.Cultivate the Friendship of Readers.

It was Chalie “Tremendous” who once said, “Two things will determine what you become in the next five years, one the books you read, and two, the friends you keep.” Attitudes are contagious. If we have friends who read, by the law of association, we tend to read and vice versa. If your friends don’t like reading, I advise you to join a reading club or association in your community.

3.Take A Book With You Every Where You Go.

Sometimes, we waste a lot of fruitful time in transit. This time can be best put into a productive use. There is no excuse for not reading if we put our minds to it. If you think you don’t have time to read, consider these men in history:

·James Watt taught himself Chemistry and Mechanics, while working at his trade mathematical-instrument maker.

·Dr. Mason translated Lucretius, while riding in his carriage in the streets of London, doing the round of patients.

·Dr. Burnley learnt French and Italian, while traveling on horseback, from one music pupil to another.

·Kirk White learnt Greek, while walking to and from a Lawyer’s office.

4.Use Toilet Time.

It’s been said that an average person spends about 525, 600 minutes in the toilet in his lifetime. That is a whole lot of time. That time can be converted into a profitable time. Toilet time can be turned to an investment time! Read my ARTICLE  HOW TO TURN YOUR TOILET TIME INTO A PROFITABLE TIME

5.Read at Least 30 minutes A day.

If you read just for 30 minutes a day you will be surprised at the of the month the volume of information you would have consumed. 30 minutes are not too difficult to squeeze out of your time in a day. Make this time sacrosanct, do it until it becomes your second nature. Experts in the field of personal development believe that whatever we do consistently for 21 days becomes a habit. Turn off the Television after work and spend 30 minutes with a good book before you go to bed.

DO YOU WASTE YOUR TOILET TIME or INVEST IT?

Learning Can Take Place Anywhere!

" A book is a dream that you hold in your hand."

                 –Neil Gaiman

" If we encounter a man of rare intellect, we should ask him what books he reads."

–Ralph Waldo Emerson

If you are like me, you use the toilet. Either you are a CEO or Janitor, we all  go to the toilet. Each time, you stand before an important man, just remember he uses the toilet like you!

It’s been said that an average person spends about 525, 600 minutes in the toilet in his lifetime. That is a whole lot of time. That time can be converted into a profitable time. Toilet time can be turned to an investment time!

How do you turn your toilet time into a self-improvement Time? Here are my few suggestions:

1. As you empty your body of waste, use that time to empty your mind of "waste." Use the time in the toilet to flush your mind of bitterness, worry, jealousy and other waste. Ensure that you come out of the toilet with a clean body and a clean mind. You will feel lighter!

2. Use toilet time to meditate. Many times we read books or learn certain things that we don’t have time to process, as a result, those things never really benefit us as they should. Toilet time is a good time to reflect or ponder overconcept or ideas. Use toilet time to internalize concepts.

3. Harvest inspiration: Because our minds are relatively calm and quiet during toilet time, we easily receive the flow of inspiration from our spirits. Many times, I come out of the toilet with a topic for a new book, ideas for my next presentation or title for my next  blog’s article. Don’t allow great ideas topass you by while in the toilet. Take a pen with you!

4. Read books: When people tell me they don’t have time to read books, Iwonder what they do with their toilet time. Do you know that If you are a fastreader, you can read 200words in a minute? That is the time it takes to read apage of an 8 * 11 size book. You can actually read a book of 200 pages in amonth in the toilet alone!

That is why you need to keep your toilet fresh and clean.

Ok, that said. Don’t forget you are still in the toilet, get out when your timeis up!

5 ACTION STEPS TO TAKE IMMEDIATE CHARGE OF YOUR LIFE!
Change your life, take action

You can’t hire a personto do your push ups for you

                                                      Jim Rohn

Don’t watch your life go by before you. You have waited for situations to get better, for thegovernment to create more jobs, for your friends to help you and on themultitude of other factors-wait no more. Become a creator, not a reactor. Be athermostat not a thermometer, while the thermometer merely reads thetemperature of the surroundings, thermostat regulates it. You are created inthe image of God with an inbuilt capacity to make things happen.

Wake up. Step out tostand out. You are the one that will succeed no one will do that for you. Infact, until you are ready, God won’t do anything for you.

The Bible tells thestory of four lepers who took charge of their lives. They have waited , expectingthings to happen- all in vain. Their conditions were worse. They had neitherfood nor companion. But they had only one thing to their advantage, theirminds-they were capable to think. Nobody has lost it all who has not lost his mind.A change usually begins with a thought. They reason among themselves “why sitdown here until we die?” Why waiting until someone comes along to help us? Whysurrender our lives to fate? Why not give it a trial?

These lepers acted. They took charge of their destiny. They made it. They didn’t die.

Hereare 5 action steps you can take to immediately change your life (gleaned fromthe story of the four lepers above)

     1.   Think.

A change begins with a thought.  A man is not finished who can think. Just asingle idea can turn your life around. A single idea can turn a marriagearound. A single idea can turn a church around. A single idea can turn a company around. Sometimes the tiny link betweenpoverty and prosperity is just a thought, an idea,  a concept or an inspiration waiting to be wokenup from the deep recess of the mind. However, thinking is the hardest job forsome. When confronted with dire situations, many will rather worry, cry, complain, whine or murmur rather than find a quiet place to think.  We should not forget there is always a wayout in any situation if we will explore our mind. There are always optionswhich might not be obvious until we think.

2.  Make a decision.

They decided on what to do. Many thinkfor eternity without arriving at anything. Thinking should lead to a decision. They decided to act. They decided to change location. They made up their mindto try different thing. Anthony Robbins said; “I believe that it’s in yourmoments of decision that your destiny is shaped”. Intention without decision is a delusion.

  3.  Act on Your Decision.

They acted on it. They rose up. They followedup on their decision. I read a lateral puzzle sometimes ago, it says-five frogswere seating on a fence, four decided to jump, how many frogs were left on thefence? Of course the answer is five! Four decided to jump, but did they jump?Intention without expression leads to regrets. For instance, if I have only decided to write this book without actually sitting down to write it, you won’t be reading it now.  A lot of people are carrying about great ideas that they do nothing about. Many people are still waiting until the conditions will improve, until they have more money, until they retire from service until…until…until…they die!

  4. Start Now

They struck while the iron was hot. Theydidn’t go about consulting people if they should act or not. Ideas lose their intensity if they are not acted upon on time. They didn’t begin to debate, analyze or justify their fears. They put all considerations, fears, roadblock aside. They acted on their decision early. Nobody could guess what would have happened if they have waited until afternoon. They properly would have died in their situations. A true decision is one that you act upon, and the one thatyou act upon now.

     5. You won’t Die!

God showed up when they took steps offaith. Miracles happen when you are on motion. The lepers took risk, and they succeeded. If they had stayed in their condition they properly would have died.In risking death they found life.

6 Success Secrets by Bishop David Oyedepo

Learn the secrets of success from one of the world’s most famous people: Bishop David Oyedepo

The enemy knows the role your mind plays in shaping your destiny. He knows your mind is the gateway to your destiny.  As a result, he constantly organizes obstacles on the way.

The devil is amind-blocker. He organizes programmes to blind your mind, because he knows thatwhen your mind is blinded, your destiny is blocked and your future becomesuncertain. We shall consider 6 obstacles to mental excellence:

1.      1.Sin

Adam before the fall was a symbol of supernatural mental excellence. He knew everything. He single-handedly named all the animals that God created. He was excellent. But the devil got him-through sin!

God has not changed. When you habitually live in sin, you’re destroying your mental capacity. Dr.T.L. Osborn said something very profound along this line. He said, “Every time you sin, something dies in you” And I believe one of the things that die inpeople when they sin is their heritage of mental excellence.

Sin! That’s Satan’snumber one trap. By enhancing and promoting your taste for sin, he drags you into the net of mental failure.

2.Accepting the Status Quo

The next trap that the enemy uses to block men’s mental excellence is to make them accept the statusquo. He gets them thinking, “This is where I belong. God has tried. This is just okay”

Listen to me: the moment you stop pushing, you start crashing! Don’t ever get to the point where, if you don’t make it, you conclude that it means God has not planned for you to makeit. Such an attitude is accepting the status quo, and it paralyses mental excellence.

Where you are today is a wonderful place, but God has a more wonderful place for you tomorrow. The results you have now are quite wonderful, but God has more awaiting you. The top is where you belong.

When life is void of progress, it becomes a burden. And nothing motivates the brain to walk like seeing something ahead of you. Let your attitude be, “I don’t care where I am now, the best is yet to come.”

3.The Trap of Past Failures

Another obstacle to mental excellence is the trap of mental torture generated by dwelling on the irreparable past. Satan connects you so much to the past, which you can’t see anything ahead anymore. If you stay glued to the negative past, your great future loses its colour.

The past is dead! It can no longer be corrected. So leave it in the grave and take the next step forward. Only those who are smart enough to bury their past enjoy a great future.

I know an elderly person who never travels by air (though he’s educated), just because he’s seen one or two planes crash in the past.

I told him that there are more car accidents than plane crashes. He has not freed himself from the past, and that dulled his mentality. So even if something good is waiting for him in Canada, for instance, he won’t go! This is just a typical case of how the devil paralyses one’s mentality.

4.Pride of Past Achievements

The fourth obstacle to mental excellence is the pride of past achievements.  What appears standard today very soon becomes sub-standard tomorrow.

Bless God for your past achievement, but it’s only a pointer that you can get more done in the future, if you choose to. For you, even in old age ,you will still bring forth fruits (Ps.92:14).

God said He has a place for you to be greatest among the greatest. He said He will set you up on high, above all the nations of the earth. But you’re so far down the ladder, yet you are taking a break!

To remain mentally awake, you have to keep moving towards a well-defined target. I said in my book, Towards Excellence in Life and Ministry, that when your assignment becomes a task, all your senses will come alive. Life is not a joke. When your assignment becomes a task, all your brain cells will take on new life.

Where you are today may look amazing, but it’s not good enough for tomorrow. The world is watching to see you take steps. If you pitch your tent too early, you will lose relevance in no time. Bless God for where you are now, but He has a bigger place for youahead, so keep moving forward!

5. Comparison.

Here is another trap;it’s comparing yourself with others especially the less privileged. You have your life to live; you have a mission to accomplish. You have to believe in the principle of identity. You are here on a mission. I don’t know what anyone else is sent to do, but bless God; I’m on a mission on this earth.

Don’t be trapped by comparing yourself with others. Whether negative or positive, you are answerable only to God. Stop wondering about what the other man will do, do your own!

6. Fear of Curses and Enchantments.

If you have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus, curses and enchantments have lost their hold on your life. You are now connected to the blessing channel of Abraham. And we know that God said to Abraham that He will bless him and make him a blessing (Gen.12:3)

That means you can’t be cursed, molested, enchanted or bewitched! Yet many have stopped thinking, because they have been made to believe that there’s a curse working against them. As a result, they operate in this consciousness, saying to themselves,“No matter how much I try, from the fourth till now, it has been the same”

Many year ago, while driving on the highway, I overtook a woman I perceive must be one of the terrible witches in that city. She met me at filling station where I had stopped to refuel, and with gleaming eyes snapped at me, “You overtook me like that? There’s no way you will get to where you’re going.” And I quickly reply her, “As soon as I get there, you will hear.”

You know there’s a word used to describe fear—paranoid. Why? Because it has a paralyzing effect on its victim.  People who live in fear hardly think well. Fear paralyses mentality. Be free from it now, in Jesus’name.
