Rev’d Tope Popoola Speaking to Leaders at an international Conference.

Tope Popoola is the Chief Empowerment Officer of HERITEK SUPPORT SERVICES, a consultancy outfit. He was for many years, the Executive Secretary of the NIGERIAN PUBLISHERS ASSOCIATION. He also briefly served as the National Executive Commissioner for the Boy Scouts of Nigeria.

–Sir, can I meet you Sir?

 

 I am Tope Popoola, child of God and Minister of the gospel. On the professional level, I am a Human Capital Development Consultant. Husband of one wife and father of three lovely children.

–Recently Sir, you were awarded the honorary citizenship of the state of Nebraska, USA and later inducted into the Judicial Service Commission of the Ekiti State here in Nigeria, how did all this come to you?

I really wish I knew. Without sounding religious, I adduce it to the grace of God. Scriptures teach us that whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might. I was on a visit to the State of Nebraska in November 2015 and was privileged to meet with the Secretary of State and a Senator of the Nebraska legislature. The meetings bordered on issues of national development and how my nation can benefit from the giant strides of Nebraska in agriculture. The Honorary Citizenship Award was a fallout of that visit. My nomination into the Ekiti State Judicial Service Commission came on the eve of my birthday in December 2015. We had just finished a fasting and prayer program and I was headed home when my phone rang and it was the Governor of the state His Excellency Peter Ayodele Fayose on the line. He requested to see me and discussed the nomination with me. I was initially hesitant and did not give him an immediate answer for various reasons, one of which was the fact that I am not a politician. I requested for time to pray and consult with my spiritual mentors on the matter. And when I was convinced that it was an assignment that God would have me do, I agreed to serve.

 

–Was your appointment as a member of Judiciary Committee of Ekiti State a political appointment?

 

I do not believe so. I am not a card-carrying member of any political party and I made that very clear to the Governor. He assured me that my nomination was based on my integrity and non-partisanship. Besides, it is a Part-time appointment. For that reason, he felt that I would be able to contribute significant value to the work of the Commission. Unfortunately, in the opinion of many, the fact that the nomination was made by the Governor makes it political.

 

–Is this not in conflict with your ministerial assignment as a priest?

 

Ministry must be properly redefined and understood by the church. Ministry is simply a work of service and can be carried out on any platform that God chooses, not the straitjackets that religion has defined for us. We are the light of the world, not the light of the church. Joseph was a Minister in Egypt. The scriptures tell us that he taught the Senators of Egypt wisdom. Daniel was a Minister in Babylon. Ministry is not restricted to the pulpit. By the way, every child of God is a Priest. Our priesthood is in Christ and after the order of Melchizedek who was both a king (rulership) and priest

 

–What will you say your new challenges are?

 

Raising a new generation of leaders in the body of Christ who will understand and run with God’s mandate on their lives to take responsibility for their world under God until every sphere of human existence is touched by the glory of God and the kingdoms of this world become the kingdom of our God and His Son Jesus. This has nothing to do with an age bracket but about new paradigms that take the church out of the defensive mode to the offensive mode where we can ACTUALLY begin to influence value systems and cultures with the culture of God’s kingdom. This is in furtherance of God’s mandate on my life to “cultivate a people of influence and affluence for whom Godly excellence is a culture”

 

–Sir, you’ve been involved in training leaders both in the Corporate and Kingdom world for many years, how would you define leadership?

 

Leadership can simply be defined as the ability to influence people to accomplish a common goal. The leader is not just the one who is out in front but the one who actually galvanizes the people, at any point in the line, towards the attainment of set objectives

 

–Hmmmm, thank you Sir, from your definition, we can say a leader is who?

 

 

Everyone who has a platform on which he can influence others to attain a common cause. God has given everyone an elastic capacity to influence others but for what purpose? This is where the rubber meets the road. Anyone who is able to envision a future so good that people are willing to brave any odds to see that future attained is a leader. This can be used for good or for ill. Someone has well said that a leader is someone that people will follow if only out of curiosity.

 

What are the greatest leadership qualities exceptional leaders must possess (in order of importance)?

 

I dealt with this issue on a teaching I once did titled THE 10 COMPETENCES OF EFFECTIVE LEADERS. Some of these are CONVICTION, COMPASSION, COMMUNICATION, CHARACTER, CONFIDENCE, CREATIVITY, and COURAGE just to mention a few and not necessarily in order of importance because they all are important

–How is leadership important to personal, home, career and nation’s building?

 

All leadership begins with self-leadership. Scriptures teach us that the man who is able to control his spirit is stronger than the one who takes a city. If you cannot exercise leadership over your own life and the resources God has given you, you cannot do the same anywhere else, family, career or at national level. Leadership is first and foremost a disposition before it is a position. Positional leadership is what most people recognize as leadership. This is why we have flagrant displays of irresponsibility at various levels of society simply because many people believe that until they attain a position, they do not need to be responsible

 

Is there way we can inculcate Leadership Intelligence (LQ) into our school curriculum?

 

I believe that EQ or Emotional Intelligence is the foundation of LQ and both should be deliberately inculcated in the child. Every child must be taught how to live within the dynamics of a collective. Leadership is first about people before it is about function. When a child is taught how to build character within a relational dynamics, he is sure to manifest the traits of leadership that make him stand out in a pack and for which many of his peers would gladly surrender leadership to. In many cases, the Head Boy/Girl in a school is determined by IQ. Without EQ, such pupils end up as apologies in the leadership position

 

What is your counsel to emerging leaders?

 

Lead WHERE YOU ARE NOW! Leadership is responsibility and influence finding a position of expression not a position seeking influence or responsibility. If you don’t have the two before you get a position, you will abuse the position. Secondly, Don’t seek popularity. Seek RELEVANCE. If you are relevant, you will be known. Several times, in His ministry, Jesus would withdraw from the crowd and go to a solitary place. Yet they sought Him out and followed Him on foot for long distances, sometimes going without food for days! Value is self-advertizing. Instead of struggling to be the best, just see to it that you DO YOUR BEST in every circumstance even when you don’t know if anyone is looking. David was alone in the wilderness with his father’s sheep. The audience he played his harp and sang his psalms for comprised the animals whose only response at best would have been a bleat or two! But someone from the palace had taken time to observe David without him knowing it! So when there was an emergency in the palace with the king losing his mind, that observer who was a Commander in King Saul’s army knew just who to call. When he reeled out the credentials of David in 1Samuel 16, it would have been a marvel to David himself if he had listened to it. Joseph came to Egypt as a slave. Consistency of character took him to the top of the ladder in a space of 13 years. If you are more concerned with being a person of value, the limelight will seek you! However, if you are in a hurry to arrive, you may disappear before your arrival!

 

Today in developing nations, leadership has been identified as the major problem to socio-economic-political development, what do you think is the panacea to this? –

 

Don’t forget that the people who make it to positional leadership started out as ordinary people. A position is only a platform. Champions are not made in the ring, they are only advertised there. Most people in leadership in the developing world had no specific vision of a corporate goal before getting there. As they say in law. “Nemo dat quod nao habe” translated, No man can give what he does not have! You cannot build something on nothing. Leadership as a disposition must be deliberately taught to everyone from the cradle. Our children must be taught to embrace RESPONSIBILITY within a collective. Leadership is first about PEOPLE. Personal interests must therefore be subsumed in the interests of the collective before there can be sustainable development

 

–Sir, at certain point in life, we all encounter failures or setbacks, how do leaders bounce back after personal or moral failure?

 

 

Never personalize or internalize a failure. By the way people don’t fail. Ventures do. Failure was not one of the software installed into man’s hard disk at creation. So failure is not your person. It is an event. Every man’s failure is simply an indication of the limitation of his strategy. In other words, it is the strategy deficiency that results in what we call failure. Just like the past, failure is a school, not a prison. So take responsibility for the deficiency in strategy. Then confront the issue. Admit that there is a better way to do things and resolve to find that better way. Regard whatever you lost to the failure as the fees you paid for going to school to learn how NOT to do it. Master the lessons in the experience. Re-strategize and re-launch. Be willing to repeat the cycle again if need be. Every success story that you see was produced by series of failures. People only succeed significantly because they are not afraid to fail significantly!

 

To wrap it up Sir, in several of your articles, your closing signature has always been “the sky is not the limit, God is” can you elaborate on this?

 

Too often, we allow the environment to condition our thinking about possibilities. What this translates to is that we define what can or cannot be done by socio-cultural precedents and thought patterns that have no bearing with the mind of God. Any environment that conditions your thinking will condition your conduct too. For everyone with the mind of Christ, the only limit we recognize should be a limit set by the word of God not the perceptions of men. The only thing I will not do or cannot do is what God says is not feasible in Him. When Peter came to complain to Jesus about tax, he came with a feeling of exasperation. He knew their purse but did not know God’s bank! Or when there was need to feed five thousand men (not counting the women and children.) Five loaves of bread and two little fishes would hardly feed a full grown adult. In fact it was the contents of a young boy’s lunch box. But that posed no limits on Jesus because He was connected to God’s riches in glory! So are we! With God, impossible should actually read “I’m possible”! God’s will is always God’s bill! The sky is only above your head but God is above the sky!

 

–Thank you Sir, what is your closing remark to regular readers of my blog?

The quality of your life is a function of the information available to you and what you have done with it! Study is the discipline of champions. Readers are leaders and leaders are readers. There is no difference between the man who will not read and the one who cannot read. But be careful what you read. Jesus not only counseled that you should be careful what you hear, but also HOW you hear. And always remember, the sky is not your limit, God is!

Is The Oval House Too Big For Dr. Ben Carson? I Don’t Think So.

“Yes Benjamin” he said.

I heard snickers around me. The other kids probably thought it was a joke, or that I was going to say something stupid.

“Obsidian” I said.

“That’s right!” He tried not to look startled, but it was obvious he didn’t expect me to give the correct answer.

“That’s obsidian,” I said, “and it’s formed by the supercooling of lava when it hits the water.”

…when I finally paused, a voice behind me whispered, “Is that Bennie Carson?”

I am a Nigerian and I love Dr. Ben Carson. I haven’t met him yet. Hopefully, when he becomes the President of United States Of America, I will have the chance to shake his “Gifted Hands.”

Dr. Ben has gone a long way; from his humble beginning at the back of Detroit, Michigan to leading his class in high School and heading Pediatric Neurosurgery at the popular Johns Hopkins at the relatively young age of 33, the youngest American to first occupy that position, not to mention his groundbreaking work of separating conjoined twins, Dr. Ben is  indeed a pictorial representation of inspiration.


 

Just like Albert Einstein’s name is synonymous to intelligence, the name Ben Carson is synonymous to achievement and inspiration. This catalogue of achievements lends credence to this: in 2000, the Library of Congress selected Carson as one of its "Living Legends." The following year, CNN and Time magazine named Carson as one of the nation’s 20 foremost physicians and scientists. In 2006, he received the Spingarn Medal, the highest honor bestowed by the NAACP. In February 2008, President George W. Bush awarded Carson the Ford’s Theatre Lincoln Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. And in 2009, actor Cuba Gooding Jr. portrayed Carson in the TNT television production Gifted Hands.


With legion of honorary degrees in his kitty, Dr. Ben Carson has become a symbol of inspiration to millions of high school students around the globe. I first heard of Dr. Ben in my sophomore at the University of Ibadan, my good friends who were medical students were always seen discussing a book authored by Ben Carson “Gifted Hands.”  Later I had the opportunity to read this book, and since, I have come to completely fall in love with Dr. Ben Carson. He’s a man who has inspired me the way nobody else has done. I could identify with his story. His journey from the wood to international fame is one of the most inspirational stories anyone could ever read.

When I heard that Dr. Ben was aspiring to become the President of United States of America, I was elated. I knew that this man could transform America with his “Gifted hands” and the mind that is always “Thinking Big” because he has eyes that can see “The Big Picture.” And anyone who has enough brain in his frontal lobes should know that Dr. Ben possesses quintessential qualities that match the office of the President of the United States


Intelligent people listen while Carson talks.


I do not write this because am an American, I write this because Dr. Ben Carson has personally influenced my life in no small measure and the lives of several people all over the world. He deserves the right publicity not the kind I have seen the mainline media in the US giving to him. While it’s true that Mr. Trump has built more WALLS than Dr. Ben Carson; the latter has built more LIVES than all the other aspirants combined. There is no telling what his “Gifted Hands” could do if Americans allow him to become their president.


I believe the position of Dr. Ben Carson in the last three primaries would have been different if the people haven’t been influenced by the media and if Dr. Ben Carson were to be a billionaire. When average people have opportunity to choose between money and values, they will go for the former. Because this man doesn’t lie or brag that doesn’t make him “incompetent” to man the office of the president. I believe he’s too decent to do that.


Dr. Ben is not on ego trip, he believes he has the capacity to heal, inspire and revive America at this critical time in her history, I believe he can do it. He has enough credentials to make every right thinking person to believe this.


I read a certain article that the reason people aren’t voting for him was because his foreign knowledge was almost non-existent, I can’t help thinking that the writer must have been “bought.” And unfortunately he has, without thinking, sold the “error” to many Americans. Because Dr. Ben is quick to admit shortcomings or mistakes in his presentation, the media have come to interpret that as “lack” of knowledge. Ability to recognize one’s mistake and correct it is one of the hallmarks of a great leader. Besides, Dr. Carson, has an insatiable appetite for learning, and can easily within a short time compensate for anything he needs to know.


For those telling him to bow out, and endorse Cruz, my question is why? Why don’t you tell Cruz to bow out and endorse Carson? Was it because he’s not a career politician and he’s never “politically correct?”  Was it because he’s too decent to call anybody an “idiot” or “stupid?”  Dr. Ben, go on, nobody expected you to go this far in life- from the back of your class to international fame- you have demonstrated that you have what it takes. You are calm, to many, that is a weakness, but that was exactly the quality in wellington that enabled him to defeat Napoleon at the waterloo.


Dr. Ben, go on, you have a cause, you are on a mission, don’t listen to the naysayers, see this journey to the end. If eventually you didn’t secure the nomination ticket it won’t be because you are “incompetent” it will be due to the old aphorism that “Politics is a dirty game” and people like you who are not dirty don’t have a chance.

 


Dr. Carson I believe this risk is worth taking for the people of America.

TEN TERRIFIC LESSONS I LEARNT FROM JUMOKE THE BREAD SELLER.

Jumoke Orisaguna the bread seller

Once in a while, we all need a break from the usual stories of suicide, bombing, kidnapping and other vices that seem to stream endlessly to us on social media. One of such phenomenon breaks is the story of a young woman who walked the streets of Lagos selling the popular Agege bread. The ex-bread seller, Jumoke Orisaguna, has suddenly moved from a nobody to international fame. Her story is a classic example of Rag-to-riches story or From Grass to Grace.

 

According to CNN “Jumoke Orisaguna is a mother of two who used to walk the streets of Lagos selling bread. Originally a hairstylist from Osun State, south west Nigeria, she was struggling to make ends meet, and left her husband and two children in their home town to become a street vendor in the economic capital. Working from 2:30pm to 11:00pm selling bread, Jumoke would make less than $20 each day –with a profit of around $1. Now she’s about to become a top model; signed to a modeling agency and gaining international fame and prominence.”

Responding to an interview, the erstwhile bread seller said, “I never expected this would ever happen to me.  My friends have told me they saw me on the TV and they are really happy. My parents cannot believe their own child can become such a success. They are all so happy.”

From this inspiring story, I have personally learnt 10 terrific lessons I will be sharing with you:

1.The Reality of Divine Favour.

There is no way one can explain the meteoric rise of Jumoke to fame without recourse to supernatural or divine assistance. I listened to her speak on NTA, and it was obvious that Jumoke lacked basic education. She wasn’t able to express herself in common English. She had no connection with TY Bello who was instrumental to her success.  It’s even possible that Jumoke didn’t owe a Facebook account though her fame started from Facebook. To me, God chose to favour Jumoke. She was divinely assisted to be at the right place at the right time. The Bible is replete with examples of divine assistance. For instance, Joseph woke up one day as a prisoner but slept that same day  as Prime Minister, Saul was looking for his father’s lost donkey, he came back anointed as the first king of Israel, David went to the battled as errand boy he returned as national celebrity. That is the reality of divine favour.

 

2.Never Surrender The Possibilities of Your Future To The Realities of Your Present.

Today for Jumoke things have changed. She is no longer a bread seller, she’s now a superstar model. This was a dream she never had! From making $1 a day to international fame, Jumoke’s yesterday realities were no longer her realities today. She has experienced a complete metamorphosis. You don’t have to define yourself based on the current status of your bank account. You may be currently struggling to make ends meet that doesn’t indicate that things will continue to be that way. Your current realities no matter how worse they are, shouldn’t steal away your dreams and aspirations.

 

3.Never look down on anybody.

Everybody is important no matter their current realities. Poor people use your past to judge you, average people use your present to measure you, but exceptional people use your future to relate with you. How many Jumokes still walk our streets today selling bread? How should we relate with that young girl who sells tomatoes in our streets. Jumoke story should tell us that every failure is a potential success, every poor man is a potential rich man, and every sinner is a potential saint. Relate with people not based on their present or past realities but by the vision of what they can become.

4. Never Write Yourself Off

It’s not over until it’s over. Jumoke in her own words said, “I never expected this would ever happen to me.  My friends have told me they saw me on the TV and they are really happy. My parents cannot believe their own child can become such a success. They are all so happy” It can happen to you and I. From a bread seller without a University degree to international fame, things can indeed change drastically. You don’t have to write yourself off because you couldn’t get a job few years after graduating from the University. Don’t write yourself off just because you couldn’t pay your house rent. Don’t write yourself off Just because you couldn’t take care of your family. If today is hopeless, remember, God has made arrangement for tomorrow.

 

5. You Don’t Need To Figure Out How Things Will Work Out.

Jumoke didn’t have to pay for audition. She didn’t even have formal or informal relationship with TY Bello. She didn’t pay for the picture. She didn’t open a Facebook account herself an upload the pic. Things just worked out for her. Now she has been given a Scholarship for her Education and her two children have also been given scholarship for their Education to University. Many a time, we worry ourselves trying to figure out how things will work out, which is absolutely not necessary. Trust in God, let go and believe things will work out without you fretting.

 

6.Be Part of Someone’s Greatness.

Jumoke won’t be where she’s now without the presence of TY Bello. Her story can never be complete without mentioning the name TY Bello. The woman is a major part of her greatness. There cannot be greater fulfillment in life than to know that through you someone had become what he is today. In a world where everybody is thinking about himself, the story of Jumoke serves us to always think about others and what we can do to support and assist them. TY Bello will forever be happy that he produced a superstar model. Jumoke success story should be dedicated to her. Be part of someone’s greatness.

 

7.Do Something.

Miracles happen when we are on motion. Jumoke could have stayed at home fighting with her husband for his inability to take care of the family. She didn’t do that. She was willing to work. Though the profit was meager, she stayed with the work until fortunes smile on her. The Bible instructs us “Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might.” Go out of your house and find something to do. From there who knows whether you will be meeting a TY Bello!

 

8.Everybody has Something.

To Jumoke it’s  beauty. I am convinced that all of us have got something marketable to our world. We may not even realize it. Jumoke didn’t realize how beautiful she was until people start liking her picture on Facebook. You have got something beautiful in you even though you may currently not be aware of it. It could  be a smile, a book, a song, a concept, an idea, a design- something. You may not wait until someone finds you, find yourself and give the world a piece of your good news.

 

 9. The Power of Social Media.

Good or evil, social media is a force. You can no longer ignore the power of social media in projecting your brand to the world. The success of Jumoke could be attributed to the power of social media. That tells us the need to take advantage of these powerful tools to showcase our beauty to the world. If you have anything at all to promote now, get it on social media, you never can tell what happens next.

 

10. A change can occur in Split Second.

Change can take place within seconds. Jumoke moment of changed occurred at the flash of a camera. Yours maybe on your way to work tomorrow; It could be through a phone call. It could be you running into an old friend. Mine can come through someone reading this article now! Stay open. Be full of expectation, a change can occur in split second. Yours may be next!

Don’t Allow Your Past to Imprison Your Future.

 

There are two ways you can view your life; you can look at the past and count your failures or look at your future and count your dreams. It’s what you count that counts!


Your past can become a limitation to what you can achieve and become in the future. Some people have become imprisoned by their past that they have no hope of fulfilling their dreams. John Mason observed, “Regret looks back; worry looks around; faith looks up!”

 

Jim Rohn in his book, 7 Strategies for Wealth and Happiness, notes, “Many people are afraid to get going because of past failure and pain. They carry heavy burdens on their souls; burden that unless they unloaded will weigh them down forever…there is nothing you can do about the past. It is gone and buried”


One thing we must know is that whatever happened in the past is gone and we can do nothing about it. But, most times rather than putting the past behind us we hold unto it in our memories which now constitute a mental block that keeps us from advancing and pursuing our goals and dreams. When this happens, one becomes confined and stagnant instead of moving on to success.

 

That dear woman of God, Kathryn Kuhlman notes, “It seems the easiest thing in the world to live in the past. When we live in the past, there are and will be regrets. We see the nurturing of hurt feelings. There will be thought of injustice, there will be memories of things that should be buried and forgotten. We are reluctant to lose our hold on the past and hesitate to start living the future. As a result, instead of joy and adventure, we know only the pangs of remorse, and we never have peace of mind.”

 

 Since, we can’t alter our past, we are supposed to focus on our present actions and take control of our future. You have a decision to make either to use your past to your advantage or allow your past to take advantage of your future.


You can make your past work for you when you learn from it and use the lesson to influence your present decision in order to avoid the negative result you had in the past or you can allow your past to take advantage of you by preventing you from trying, aspiring and advancing. Robert Schuller questioned, “Are old hurts, old defeats, and old setbacks haunting, holding, and hurting you?

“I’ll never get married again.”

“I’ll never trust anyone again”

“I’ll never believe God again”

“I’ll never go into business again”

“I’ve been burned once-never again”

He added, “If you think this way then you have allowed past unfortunate incidents to move in and dominate you. Don’t let bad memories manipulate you.”

 

You need to understand that every successful person had his or her own past. In fact, if you have the privilege to listen to the story of some successful people, vis-à-vis, their beginning, their mistakes and failures- you will be encouraged. You may then reason that you have not really done anything compared to them to merit being called a permanent failure. John Mason said, “Failure may look like a fact, but it’s just an opinion. Successful people believe that mistakes are just feedback. It’s not how far you fall but how high you bounce that makes the difference.”
